At Yaya's, starter locs begin with a consultation before the first strand is touched. We talk about your texture, your routine, and the locs you're picturing a year from now, because what we start today sets the grid for everything that comes after. There's no single correct method — coils, comb coils, two-strand twists, and interlocking all produce beautiful results on the right head, and the wrong one fights your hair for months.
We work in ninety-minute rhythms rather than racing the clock. Most starter appointments run three to seven hours depending on length and density, and we'd rather take the time than rush a section. You leave with written aftercare notes, not just a verbal handoff.
Expect your locs to look their most unruly between weeks four and twelve — this is the budding phase and it's a feature of loc'ing, not a mistake. Resist the urge to retwist daily; over-manipulation early on is the number-one reason new locs thin or break.
